Amazon unveils flying Ring security drone and Luna games service

Image
It is designed to activate only when residents are out, works indoors, and is limited to one floor of a building. The firm also unveiled an online games-streaming service and a voice-activated screen that swivels about. But one campaign group described the drone camera as Amazon's "most chilling home surveillance product" yet. "It's difficult to imagine why Amazon thinks anyone wants flying internet cameras linked up to a data-gathering company in the privacy of their own home," said Silkie Carlo from Big Brother Watch. "It's important to acknowledge the influence that Amazon's product development is having on communities and the growing surveillance market." When the Always Home Cam is triggered by a suspected break-in, owners will get a smartphone alert to let them see live footage. Amazon said that privacy had been "top of mind" when the machine was designed. "It only reports when it's in motion, and when it...

Google and Facebook may ban children's ads

Image
Behavioural advertising not only undermines privacy but puts "susceptible" youngsters under unfair    marketing pressure, the letter says.   It is addressed to Google, Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Microsoft.   In a separate move Google-owned YouTube is accused of unlawfully mining data from five million    under-13s in the UK.   European data protection laws forbid the mining of data of young children.   "The fact that ad-tech companies hold 72 million data points on a child by the time they turn 13 shows the    extent of disregard for these laws, and the extraordinary surveillance to which children are subjected," the    letter reads.   "There is no justification for targeting teenagers with personalised ads any more than there is for    targeting 12-year-olds.   "You, the most powerful companies on the internet, have a responsibility to protect your users."

Facebook wants to put smart glasses on your face

Image
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Wednesday the social network plans to release its first pair of  smart glasses next year. The company has partnered with EssilorLuxottica, which owns eyewear brands including Ray-Ban, to  support different designs and styles for the upcoming glasses. The glasses will bear the Ray-Ban brand. "I can't go into full product details yet, but they're gonna be the next step on the road to augmented reality  glasses, and they look pretty good too," Zuckerberg said at Facebook Connect, the company's virtual  reality and augmented reality conference. The event used to be known as Oculus Connect. Facebook also unveiled a new version of its Oculus Quest VR headset with an upgraded processor and  higher-resolution display. The new headset, called the Oculus Quest 2, has a price tag of $299, which is  $100 cheaper than its predecessor.

Samsung's third attempt at a folding smartphone

Image
Samsung has revealed its third attempt at a folding smartphone: the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 5G. Its original Galaxy Fold smartphone was delayed for several months after several early reviewers found the screens broke or were easily damaged. BBC Click's Chris Fox went hands-on with Samsung's latest version to see what it had changed since its first attempt.

A New App tells if office workers are not socially distanced

Image
How it works Employees can choose to download the app and set their desired distance,  in line with government guidelines. They will then receive a notification when another user of the app is too close. Mind The Gap uses inaudible ultra-high frequency sounds and Bluetooth to calculate the distance between phones, so it does not require an active internet connection to work.   Hack Partners says the combination of the technology with audio measuring, gives an accuracy of between 6-8cm. The app will continue to work in the background, which means it could drain phone battery. Tests so far have shown that the high frequency sounds do not affect children, dogs, cats or hearing aids, said River Tamoor Baig, chief executive of Hack Partners.   Mind The Gap was designed by London start-up Hack Partners for the company, to keep employees safe at work. The technology uses audio and Bluetooth signals to detect if users are in close proximity to one another. Network Ra...

Dumping passwords can improve your security

Image
They're hard to remember, hackers exploit their weaknesses and fixes often bring their own problems.  Dashlane, LastPass, 1Password and other password managers generate strong and unique passwords for  every account you have, but the software is complex. Services from Google, Facebook and Apple allow  you to use your passwords for their services at other sites, but you have to give them even more power  over your life online. Two-factor authentication , which requires a second passcode sent by text message  or retrieved from a special app each time you log in, boosts security dramatically but can still be  defeated. A big change, however, could eliminate passwords altogether. The technology, called FIDO, overhauls  the log-in process, combining your phone; face and fingerprint recognition; and new gadgets called  hardware security keys. If it delivers on its promise, FIDO will make cringeworthy passwords like  "123456" relics of...

Are game streaming services bad for the planet

Image
Microsoft is poised to launch its game streaming service, delivering high-end titles direct to phones -  and Google already offers an equivalent service.   Cloud gaming promises top-tier graphics and performance without the expensive hardware - with no    more massive updates or downloads.   But some studies suggests it could be more damaging to the planet.   One recent study from Lancaster University estimated that if gamers moved to streaming over the next    decade, carbon emissions could rise by 30%.   Instead of having a high-end PC or games console in the home, cloud gaming platforms run the    software from a remote data centre.   All the graphics and sounds are streamed to a TV or mobile device over the internet. It's interactive - so    unlike video streaming, those graphics and sounds are tailored to each player.   And the internet itself uses a lot of power.    "There are a ...

The new Alexa for Residential program from Amazon

Image
Amazon's smart speakers will be usable without any set up for new renters once they move in, and  these devices can be used for self-guided tours for prospective renters, providing general information  like square footage and monthly rent. Tenants will be able to link their Amazon accounts so they can  use all of Alexa's features, such as calling friends or playing your Spotify. Once a renter moves out,  property managers will be able to reset these speakers while keeping the connections to smart-home  features in place.   Amazon has brought Alexa to homes, hotels and college dorms. It's next stop is apartment rentals. On Thursday, the online retailer revealed its new Alexa for Residential program, which will make it  easier for landlords and property managers to add dozens of Amazon's voice assistant and Alexa- powered smart home devices into their rental units. "The resident has to do zero setup," said Liron Torres, Amazon Alexa's h...

Blackouts that cut cell service aren't just annoying

It's wildfire season again in California as the second and third largest blazes in the state's history  continue  to burn. More than a thousand structures across 10 counties have been destroyed and (so far) five people  have died as hazardous smoke blanketed the more populous parts of the Bay Area for weeks. But so far at  least, Northern California utility PG&E hasn't had to institute Public Safety Power Shutoff programs I  hope that lasts. The programs, which are about as dystopian as they sound, were a fact of life across the state during fire  season last year. To prevent its power lines from sparking wildfires during windy conditions  PG&E equipment caused the 2018 Camp Fire the and deadliest most destructive  in the state's history -- the  public company purposefully plunged entire cities into darkness, sometimes for as long as a week. (The  state's other giant utility, Southern California Edison, conducted ...

Facebook will start limiting political ads

Image
On Thursday Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg  decided many steps in the social media site is taking to  encourage voting and fight misinformation ahead of the US elections in November. In addition to efforts  already in place, Zuckerberg said Facebook will expand its voter suppression policies and block new  political and issue ads during the final week of the campaign.  In an interview with CBS This Morning about its election policies, Zuckerberg said Facebook will also  add context to posts --including from President Donald Trump -- that seek to broadly delegitimize mail-in  voting or the outcome of the election.
