  Behavioural advertising not only undermines privacy but puts "susceptible" youngsters under unfair    marketing pressure, the letter says.   It is addressed to Google, Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Microsoft.   In a separate move Google-owned YouTube is accused of unlawfully mining data from five million    under-13s in the UK.   European data protection laws forbid the mining of data of young children.   "The fact that ad-tech companies hold 72 million data points on a child by the time they turn 13 shows the    extent of disregard for these laws, and the extraordinary surveillance to which children are subjected," the    letter reads.   "There is no justification for targeting teenagers with personalised ads any more than there is for    targeting 12-year-olds.   "You, the most powerful companies on the internet, have a responsibility to protect your users."

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Wednesday the social network plans to release its first pair of  smart glasses next year. The company has partnered with EssilorLuxottica, which owns eyewear brands including Ray-Ban, to  support different designs and styles for the upcoming glasses. The glasses will bear the Ray-Ban brand. "I can't go into full product details yet, but they're gonna be the next step on the road to augmented reality  glasses, and they look pretty good too," Zuckerberg said at Facebook Connect, the company's virtual  reality and augmented reality conference. The event used to be known as Oculus Connect. Facebook also unveiled a new version of its Oculus Quest VR headset with an upgraded processor and  higher-resolution display. The new headset, called the Oculus Quest 2, has a price tag of $299, which is  $100 cheaper than its predecessor.

Two-factor authentication , which requires a second passcode sent by text message  or retrieved from a special app each time you log in, boosts security dramatically but can still be  defeated. A big change, however, could eliminate passwords altogether. The technology, called FIDO, overhauls  the log-in process, combining your phone; face and fingerprint recognition; and new gadgets called  hardware security keys. More than a thousand structures across 10 counties have been destroyed and (so far) five people  have died as hazardous smoke blanketed the more populous parts of the Bay Area for weeks. But so far at  least, Northern California utility PG&E hasn't had to institute Public Safety Power Shutoff programs I  hope that lasts. The programs, which are about as dystopian as they sound, were a fact of life across the state during fire  season last year. To prevent its power lines from sparking wildfires during windy conditions  PG&E equipment caused the 2018 Camp Fire the and deadliest most destructive  in the state's history -- the  public company purposefully plunged entire cities into darkness, sometimes for as long as a week.   On Thursday Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg  decided many steps in the social media site is taking to  encourage voting and fight misinformation ahead of the US elections in November. In addition to efforts  already in place, Zuckerberg said Facebook will expand its voter suppression policies and block new  political and issue ads during the final week of the campaign.  In an interview with CBS This Morning about its election policies, Zuckerberg said Facebook will also  add context to posts --including from President Donald Trump -- that seek to broadly delegitimize mail-in  voting or the outcome of the election.
